I’m still alive

Ok, I’m going to write something tonight. I want to start writing more and improving my writing. But I’m having trouble thinking of anything to write about. I think I’ll just write about what’s been going on in my life recently.

I saw David Sedaris a couple nights ago. He’s one of my favorite authors so I really enjoyed getting to hear him speak. He read a lot from his diaries. I was hoping maybe he would give me some inspiration for this blog but his writing is so witty it’s really hard for me to relate. He also talked politics for a while so that was cool. It’s a little reassuring finding out that I share political views with someone I admire. Even if the main basis for that reassurance is that we both hate Trump.

I went to the Austin Zoo over the weekend. That was really fun. Austin has a sanctuary or rehab-type zoo. So a lot of the animals are older or being “rescued” from bad homes. Each exhibit told a little about the individual animals and it’s really surprising how many used to be pets. A lot of these were exotic pets I had never heard of too. So I think I enjoy this type of zoo more than a normal one where you feel worse for the animals being in captivity.

I’m listening to Sweet Spirit right now. I really enjoyed seeing them during SXSW with you guys; their new album came out April 7th and it’s solid.

I also volunteered at the homeless shelter here in Austin over the weekend. I’ve done it the last 2 weekends and I’ll probably do it again this Saturday. It’s interesting watching the people. Everyone is really friendly to me so far. My main tasks are just helping people make long-distance calls, making copies, and telling people they have to find an employee when they ask me a question that I’m clueless about.

I’m tempted to go farther back and brag about some of the cooler things I did (more bragging) but that’s enough for now. I’ve got a lot of concerts coming up in May that I’m excited about so maybe I’ll try to do some concert reviews on here. I’m also about to finish a book and think this might be a good spot for book reviews. Hopefully I can keep doing short, quick posts like this. I’d really like to get more into blogging about specific topics but I’m having trouble doing that so far.

Right now I’m reading I Got There: How I Overcame Racism, Poverty, and Abuse to Achieve the American Dream by JT McCormick.

Right now I’m listening to a lot of music by Angel Olsen, Damien Jurado, Portugal. The Man, Sylvan Esso, Cold War Kids, Sweet Spirit, and Kendrick Lamar.

Thanks for reading.

Love you all.

  1. Glad to have you back Doug! Don’t worry about what to write about, what you did here is cool.
Of course Austin has a sanctuary zoo!
You Dan and I have talked more about politics recently than ever before. Even though we disagree about the role government has in our society I respect your opinion and you back up your beliefs with action!
I could handle more government if they all had your heart brother!
Thanks for the post, keep them coming !

  2. Yeah that’s cool bout the zoo Doug! I have a dislike now for the typical zoo, at times too. Keep posting! I like em ✌️
